Steve was born with Cystic Fibrosis and diagnosed at the age of 5. Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disease that primarily attacks the lungs and pancreas.
On 1 April 1988, Steve was the first person that Stanford University Hospital successfully performed a domino transplant, when he received a healthy heart and double-lungs. Incredibly, his healthy heart was donated to someone waiting for a heart transplant.
