Surely That’s Wrong, Right?
February 1998
Guilt, fear and down right not sure what to do… is it something for me to even ponder on, Renee giving me one of her kidneys? What are the chances of a match let alone can she live with only one kidney? What about our 2 boys, Dustin & Cody, they need to be cared for during and after the surgery?
These are just some of the discussion issues we struggled over until we settled down and reminded ourselves who we are and how God always answers our prayers. The answer may not necessarily always be what we wanted but things always works out for the best. We eventually came up with the plan to talk to my nephrologist at the next dialysis appointment.
It’s kinda strange how Renee and I can make plans on what to talk about with Dr. Keebler the kidney doc, but when in front of him we easily lose our ideas and attack plan.
Fortunately he’s perceptive and professional. He actually hears before we can make our full plan known, thankfully as we probably sounded confused. Unfortunately he bummed us out with his thoughts, he didn’t believe Renee would ba a match for me but regardless he would set us up for testing. Yeah testing, everyone loves testing! Not!
Actually this stuff is easy but with us living in Central Oregon all transplant stuff is conducted in Portland Oregon. Not too bad of a 4 hour drive unless in bad weather as we watched the snow coming down with heavy wind! Hummmm, we do what we gotta do and the next day we sat off with prayer and a full tank of gas.
What can I say but wow! Driving in heavy snow is fun, if your going skiing or sledding, not to an hospital appointment. A 51/2 hour haul, it could have been worse as we did make it safe and only slightly late, did our appointment and fair amount of blood drawn from both of us the back home. The drive home was worse, dark outside with severe snow & ice making it nearly 61/2 hours.
Upon arrival to our beautiful little safe & warm home we noticed our answering machine blinking! Yes it was the hospital and YES, WE MATCHED! We matched blood types so well it was as if we were related!!!
That’s how God works……
