The Diabetes Plume. part 1
If one were to look at the sheer numbers, this disease seems shockingly unbelievable, It’s hard to comprehend. In America alone there’s 38+ million people battling diabetes and don’t think these are just older people, the age group is largely made up with 20 to 70 year old men and women while roughly 1800 youth are diagnosed each year.
If you were to walk into a room and see nine other people chances are, one of you are a diabetic. It’s not contagious yet its numbers are growing out of control, by the year 2050 the numbers in the US alone are expected to climb 165%.
At the time I was diagnosed I had gone to my primary doctor because I was feeling as if I had a bad flu. This took place some 31 years ago, yikes! I had no idea what diabetes was nor did I ever imagine I had it. My blood sugar was an out of control level of 325, almost 3x the blood sugar of a healthy persons.
From the day I was diagnosed I entered into a steep learning curve, learning how to monitor, medicate and understand what to watch for. It all seemed so straight forward, ha I wish! All these years with this disease and I’m still learning as my body ages each year.
While there are 2 main types of diabetes, type 1 which is inherited or caused from sickness and there is type 2 diabetes which is generally caused by diet or regular alcohol abuse along with a general poor health and lack of exercise. I had type 1 which is insulin dependent and changed my life in everything I do.
Why? Why do I work so hard at controlling my blood sugar Levels? Very simple.
More than half of people living with diabetes did not take medication for control, I will always try hard.
Diabetes causes blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, stroke and lower limb & toe amputation, I refuse any of these!
We all have choices in life, do or don’t, along with too many maybes or someday. Excuses don’t work, they never have! Why would anyone want to be sick when we don’t have too? I didn’t have a choice with diabetes, I was marked to get it but now i have a choice!
THE ANSWER IS FOR US TO CHOOSE TO DO OUR BEST! Do what ever it takes to eat good, exercise, control or stop alcohol, control the fast food, candy and those happy donut trips.
